Redundancy Design for Mining Control Rooms

N+1 configurations, failover testing and alarm strategies for rooms where cooling loss halts production.

Defining the criticality

If a cooling failure stops production or removes operational visibility, the room is critical infrastructure and must be treated as such in the cooling design and the risk register.

N+1 as a minimum

A single unit sized to full load has no margin for maintenance or failure. Two units each capable of the full load allow rotation, servicing and genuine failover.

Testing the failover

Redundancy that has never been tested is an assumption. Scheduled failover tests with recorded recovery behaviour turn the design into a verified control.

Applied context

This document reflects our field experience on control rooms in surface environments across national mining operations. Site conditions vary — we recommend verification against your own measured data.
